In this workshop, Professor Benjamin Kao, Professor of Department of Computer Science and Co-Director of HKU Law and Technology Centre, will talk about HKU’s efforts in bringing legal knowledge to the public by using Artificial Intelligence. In particular, he will give examples of how machine learning and natural language processing techniques help to make legal knowledge more accessible. These examples include using machines to understand and summarize court judgements, predict sentencing decisions, analyze the basis for judgement and provide advice.

About the speaker:

Professor Ben Kao received his B.Sc. degree in computer studies from HKU and his PhD in computer science from Princeton University. He was a research fellow at Stanford University for 3 years before joining HKU CS in 1995. He is a co-director of HKU Law and Technology Centre. Professor Kao’s research interests include data engineering and data mining.
