It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Mr Edmund Tam Wing Fan (譚榮芬先生) on 12 May 2020.

Born and grown up in Hong Kong, Mr Tam was among the first cohort of Architecture students admitted to the Faculty of Engineering of The University of Hong Kong in 1950. At that time, the Department of Architecture was housed in the Engineering Faculty. After graduation, Mr Tam’s vision, dedication, and enthusiasm continued to help him flourish in his architectural profession and business investments. He set up his own firm, the Edmund Wing-Fan Tam Architects. He became a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects in 1974, immediately after its formal establishment as an institute in 1972.

In addition to his professional vision, Mr Tam also served on the Board of Directors of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, during which time he advocated for the provision of much needed welfare services for the community, such as free medication, education, and dignified burial for the underprivileged, as well as relief for victims of natural disasters.

“Edmund always treasures his experience at HKU and it meant a lot to him. What he learnt from HKU, he carried all through his life. He very much wants the future generation of students to have the same privileges, and that is the reason why he wants to give back,” Mrs May Tam, his beloved wife, once said.

Mr Tam is proud to be an HKU alumnus and would like the next generations of students to be inspired in the same way that he had been during his studies at the University. In 2017, Mr and Mrs Tam announced their commitment to support the establishment of the Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing in the Faculty of Engineering, where students can expand their imagination and realize their ideas. More recently, Mr and Mrs Tam generously provided the Faculty with additional support to establish Phase II of the Innovation Wing, which focuses on high-level research to bring impact to society. His philanthropy is also extended to the LKS Faculty of Medicine in HKU, other educational institutes, and non-profit organizations. In recognition of his contributions to society and the academia, The University of Hong Kong presented the Honorary University Fellowship to him in 2019.

We appreciate Mr Tam’s staunch support to the Faculty. We will remember Mr Tam as a warmhearted pioneer to foster the growth of future generations. We express our deepest condolences to Mrs May Tam, his family members, and friends.
