Build Smart – Innovation in Construction

Construction and infrastructure make significant contributions to economic growth and social development. In Hong Kong, the annual construction output will reach HK$300billion in the coming years. However, the construction industry in many economies face significant challenges such as labour shortages, an ageing workforce and cost escalation, which hamper the enhancement of productivity and sustainability. Various innovative approaches have been developed, spearheaded by modular integrated construction (MiC), coupled with the adoption of many smart technologies such as AI, IoT, VR, robot, Digital Twin, etc. This workshop aims to systematically explore the knowledge, theory, and technology solutions of innovation in construction and infrastructure development. The workshop will first define the key concepts within their theoretical contexts. We will then examine the smart technologies adopted in construction with demonstration cases. Innovations and technologies will be illustrated using various real-life projects. Metaphorically, MiC acts as an aircraft carrier to drive smart technologies which act as fighter aircrafts, in return, to safeguard and empower MiC in transforming the industry towards sustained success. The workshop will also explore the prospective development of innovation by sharing the latest research and development led by CICID and MiC Lab of HKU.
