Student Interest Group (SIG) – Engineering and Archaeology is organizing a fieldtrip to Pokfulam Village, a local historical site in the west of Hong Kong Island. It is home to the Fire Dragon Dance as well as the site for Hong Kong’s first dairy farm.

 

In this trip, you will learn about the tradition of the Fire Dragon Dance and see how the dragons are hand-crafted. You will visit the remains of the former dairy farm, hear the villagers’ stories about growing up in this village and their memories of the farm which used to provide Hong Kong with fresh milk and offer employment to the villagers. You can also try out an Augmented Reality (AR) app to reconstruct the remains of the former dairy farm.

 

Join us to study how the villagers are striving to restore and reuse the historic houses facing pressure from urban redevelopment plans, explore the sustainable ways to conserve and manage the village, and think about how you can contribute your technical and engineering skills to studying and preserving the past!
