About HKU iGEM

HKU iGEM team 2023 is a team of undergraduate students from different fields, aiming at building safe and sustainable projects that serve the public interest. We participate in the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition. We have chosen immunotherapy as our topic this year, tackling the obstacle of treating solid tumour with new approaches. Over years, HKU IGEM team have won multiple awards, welcoming students from different cohort, establish platforms of synthetic biology accessible for all students.

Workshop Details
The Innovation Academy is thrilled to offer the workshop “BioBuilders: The Future of DNA Engineering’. Participants will explore synthetic biology and DNA engineering, learning about DNA engineering basics like CRISPR and its extensive applications. Led by the HKU iGEM Team, the workshop includes interactive activities such as lab experiments for crime solving and programming trials. Discover how the team tackles real-world challenges with impactful projects. Join us for this engaging workshop to take on the role of a BioBuilder, using innovative techniques to solve cases.

Eligibility: All HKU students are welcome to join.

No prior knowledge is required.

Participants will be divided into three groups and rotate the follow three activities:

1. Electrophoresis Evidence: Understanding the Crime Scene (Gel electrophoresis) (45 minutes) (in Wet Lab)
2. Gene Quest: The CRISPR Challenge (Interactive card games) (45 minutes) (in Makerspace A)
3. BioBuilder’s Coding Challenge (Programming challenge) (45 minutes) (in Makerspace A)
