Innovative ways to automate archaeological work?
A field trip to Wun Yiu Village, the only Ming, Qing blue and white porcelain production site in Hong Kong.
Date: November 6, 2021 (Saturday)
Time: 9:00am – 1:00pm
Venue: Wun Yiu Village, Tai Po
Did you know there was an ancient pottery-making industry in HK? Do you want to uncover the secrets of how families joined together to use local resources to make ceramics? Join us on an archaeological field trip to follow the clues of past human activity through the Tai Po River valley. Learn about the historic Wun Yiu temple, trek through banana fields and jungle to discover hidden artifacts of the past, see how animals were used to grind materials, explore deep into a cave rich in porcelain minerals… We will take you on a trip to the centuries-old Win Yiu village to explore why almost half a million porcelain bowls were shipped from here across south Asia. Learn what archaeologists do, and see if you can contribute to studying the objects of the past. Archaeology is a field that has a low level of automation but needs more. During the trip, we will also think about how engineering can help archaeological fieldwork, such as through innovative ways to record and present archaeological sites and artefacts with new technologies. We will even play with an AR/VR app at the site. Let the adventure begin!
