About Engineering Inno Show

The Engineering InnoShow is a showcase carnival that celebrates innovative Engineering student projects at the end of every semester​. Participating students will have the opportunity to expound on their inventive design, research and projects; harness timely and constructive feedback given by peers, teachers, industry experts and the public through knowledge exchange; and spin talent and ideas into innovative (re)inventions. There are many reasons why Engineering InnoShow is a unique concoction of its missions and vision. We offer a vibrant, inter/multi-disciplinary and hands-on learning platform for students to create their own impact, in and out of the classroom. The showcases also paint junior fellows a concrete picture of what constitutes an exemplary work and open pathways for them to look at Engineering through the lens of their senior cohorts, whether they are from Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Environmental Engineering. We believe that Engineering united with hands-on experience is essential. It is our vision to inspire a generation of intrepid explorers and committed collaborators. At Engineering InnoShow, we are transmitting knowledge and values through narrative. Whether it is communicated in layman’s terms or field-specific terminologies, we hope that the seeds of creative minds will germinate and thrive.

New Geo-material for Reclamation: Coal Ash-hardened Marine Soil

Extensive reclamations such as the Airport 3rd Runway System, Tung Chung New Town Extension and the Lantau Tomorrow Vision are proposed and these megaprojects require over 500 million tonnes of backfilling material. However, local fill banks only provide less than 10 million tonnes yearly. In order to alleviate the shortage, this study aims at producing a new geo-material by hardening soft marine soil primarily with coal ash generated from power plants.

Unconfined compression tests were carried out on hardened soil specimens. A set of variables were tested to examine the optimum mix design. About half of the specimens achieved an unconfined compressive strength of over 1 MPa.

The result shows that water to stabiliser ratio and the curing duration are the key strength-contributing factors. It was also found that the unconfined compressive strength of hardened soil is nearly proportional to its deformation moduli. These showed that coal ash is effective yet economic for hardening marine soil.

Early Diagnosis of Scoliosis in Children from RGB-D Images Using Deep Learning

Scoliosis is typically diagnosed from X-ray images, but diagnostic X-rays increase the risk of developmental problems and cancer in those exposed. This project aims to eliminate children’s X-ray exposure in the early diagnosis of scoliosis by generating X-ray images of children’s backs from the corresponding harmless RGB-D images. In this project, a deep learning model based on HRNet was built and trained to detect landmark locations of the backs on the RGB-D images first. With the detected landmarks, the X-ray images of the children’s backs were eventually synthesized from the corresponding RGB-D images by another deep learning model that was built and trained based on the pix2pix model.

Optical microscopy is now seamlessly integrated with many bioassay technologies for disease diagnosis. However, current techniques lack the throughput to image large and heterogeneous cell and tissue samples systematically. In addition, the vast majority of the methods overwhelmingly rely on biochemical markers such as stains and antibodies for enhancing image contrast, which are however not always be cost effective and efficient. To address these challenges, this project is to develop a spinning disk bioassay platform, which enables ultralarge-scale, label-free, high-resolution “on-the-fly” single-cell or whole-tissue-slide imaging at an imaging rate of 100-times faster than current assays. This high-throughput and high-content technology could open a new paradigm in data-driven bioassay applied in disease diagnostics, and biotechnology industries.

Fever screening using smartphones

Every day, millions of Hong Kongers use public transport to travel across the city. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, public transport has the potential to spread the novel Coronavirus. This can be avoided if strict preventive measures are in place.

The solution to this is a non-intrusive, real time application that automates fever screening in public transport vehicles. This is made possible thanks to a mobile application that we are developing at HKU. We use a portable thermal camera and a mobile device to detect faces in a stream of thermal images, and then measure forehead temperatures. This can be done in real-time, and requires little to no manual intervention.

Posture Eye

This is an Android app that monitors a person sitting posture in real time. It keeps track of three points of a human body: ear, shoulder, and hip position.
By observing these three points, the app categorize the posture of the person into 1)
Straight, 2) Hunched Back or 3) Arched Back, and records the distribution of your posture during the monitored period (e.g. When you are doing revision, you sit straight 50% of the time, you hunchback 25% of the time and you arch back 25% of the time).
To use this app, position your phone camera so that it captures the side view of your sitting posture, then the app will start to monitor your posture automatically and gives you a simple report of your posture after the session.

After more than 20 years of development, we have witnessed the birth of many life-changing innovations like social networks. They can help in connecting us with more and more people, even distant ones, yet only in a virtual form. This is where the problem starts to emerge: virtual content and connections are dominating our lives, disconnecting us from the real world. This is a problem we would like to address with Ping. It is a next-generation social network aiming at reconnecting our users back to reality so that our users will be able to pay more attention to the people and events around them, but not only to the virtual content shown on a 5-inch screen in front of them.

Combing Physical and Virtual Gaming Experience – Hexplore Fort

Since the gaming industry is becoming saturated, players tend to raise their requirements to the quality of gaming experience. Fusion of physical and virtual gaming experience may provide a fresh feeling to the players. In this project, a single-player Augmented Reality (AR) mobile game called Hexplore Fort is developed, where the players can control a spider-like robot – hexapod to adventure with the storyline in the game. Players can explore the fort that is augmented by AR by controlling the movement of hexapod, collecting items, fighting with enemies and buying assistance provided by the spy, in order to capture the princess.

RoboFish (The VAYU project)

This project is the first endeavour of BREED HKU, HKU’s first bio-inspired robotics organisation. RoboFish is our very own robotic fish, controlled by a raspberry pi and powered by a battery, aimed at helping us learn more about underwater biomechanics. Not only does the fish have a high speed potential, but the project also involves the study of how fish movements are affected by different variables such as turbulence and drag. This targets the analysis of marine biology and ecosystems. Our model has many applications for research and development in the academic world, such as surveillance systems and sea exploration.

“Cognizance” – A mobile app for promoting mental health wellness for students

In today’s fast paced world, students in particular are suffering from mental health problems caused exam stress and social anxiety, leading to a rise in suicide rates and depression. Furthermore, discussing mental health problems remains a taboo in our society, preventing youngsters from approaching their family or friends for help. Cognizance, our mobile app, allows students to sign up confidentially and browse through various mindfulness activities designed for improving their mental state through their daily activities. Our mobile app uses data analytics and artificial intelligence for making personalised recommendations to users on the activities that best suit their mental health.

The project has been involved in “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2019” and results in fruitful outcomes.

Smart Email Client To Detect Malicious URLs

The aim of this project was to detect phishing emails or URLs with a high accuracy. For the same, our deliverable was in the form of an improved email client that scrapes the last unread email from a user’s inbox and checks if it is safe or malicious. A series of Machine Learning algorithms were tried and experiments and research was conducted. From the results obtained, it was determined that a Balanced Random Forest algorithm after optimization in the form of algorithm tuning, training-testing split, feature analysis and other methods, was the most suitable choice for the project as it gave an accuracy of around 98% and after some experiments on optimization, it even reached a 100% accuracy.

MEASURE: A SenseHat Smart Home Measuring System

This project fully utilises the sensors on SenseHat to build a SenseHat smart home measuring System MEASURE. There are three functionalities provided by MEASURE: Level meter, Compass, and HomeKit Integration. Level meter can detect if a line is horizontal or if a surface is flat, and a compass can calculate the degrees turned as well as finding correct directions. If not in use, MEASURE can be a perfect HomeKit accessory that reports readings to your device. So MEASURE is a smart tool that can detect temperature and humidity right at your mobile and help determine positions for furniture placement. It can also provide angle guidance for homemade DIY stuff, and assist you in many other areas.

BuslMan – Innovative Design Using Building Information Modelling

The development of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology has reshaped our construction industry in many aspects throughout different stages in the project life cycle. Our team, BusIMan, has learnt more about the practical usages of BIM through this competition with our collaboration.
The designed complex is dedicated to the Digital Design & Construction Centre (DDCC). Our design comprises two buildings (South Wing and North Wing) linked by an arch bridge (“The Link”) with a podium underneath. This forms a shape of “CIC” when browsing on the plan view. An iconic bridge (“The Wave”) extends from the complex to the adjacent building, transforming the complex into a district icon. With aesthetic considerations and segmented zones for different facilities type, the complex aims at providing a desirable learning space and a professional working environment.

Weakly Supervised Object Localization for Assembly Line Understanding

Our main objective for this project is to design a deep learning model to perform an efficient and accurate object classification and localization on assembly line so that further human-robot collaboration can be facilitated. We further formulate our task as a weakly supervised object localization problem. More specifically, the model will be training with image-level labeled data and output a predicted category and a bounding box for the object that worker is interacting with given one input image.

Mental health issues, especially depression and loneliness, are becoming more common amongst young people. Fortunately, they are usually treatable without any medical help, and games might be the answer. Onslaught Arena is a web-based, online game that was modified to introduce multiplayer support and communication services to combat depression and loneliness. Smart Laundry System

SLS (Smart Laundry System) by R.C. Tech Club aims to help hall residents in R.C. Lee Hall track the availability of laundry machines that are situated on the 16th floor using their mobile devices. Until now, residents had to go all the way to the 16th floor for laundry, only to find that the machines are full. We took advantage of a light indicator on the laundry machines that would tell us if the door of a machine is locked (when the machine is in use). Employing light sensors, the system collects information about the status of the doors (and hence, the status of the machines). Then, the system sends that data to our web infrastructure, to be displayed on a user-friendly website on a real-time basis, effectively making our laundry machines an IoT.

The Greater China Design Competition 2019 (GCDC) was held by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Playing chess with robotic arm

This project aimed at building an autonomous chess-playing machine that can play chess with a human player at home. It consisted of making a robotic arm, building arm controller apps, applying openCV on the mobile phone, and building an AI chess engine.
The working logic are described as four steps. First, the phone capture an image of the chessboard. Then, it recognizes the chessboard and location and color of the piece. Next, the chess engine determines the next move and sends the command to the robotic arm. Finally, the robotic arm helps to move the piece.

Nano-functionalized porous membrane filter for reusable face mask

The project aims to develop a reusable face mask filter using nanofiber technique to relieve the social and environmental burden caused by current one-time using face masks. The filter consists of electrospun nanofibers with much smaller diameters (e.g., nm level), which are much smaller than the commercial filter fibers (e.g., µm level). The developed nanofibrous filter has high air filtration efficiency without sacrificing the breathe comfortability, which can be attributed to its high porosity and improved physical structure. The filter design is also highly flexible to incorporated with other physicochemical methods for further improvement of the filter properties. An impressive feature of this invention is the reusability. Simple chemical washing can regenerate the exhausted filter for further reuse with maintained high air filtration performance.

Automation technology has been highly adopted by different manufacturing industries in the past two decades. It shows an increasing investment in research and development throughout these two decades to replace labor in production lines. The leading dyeing and finishing machinery development company Fong’s National Engineering Co. Ltd. offered us a project in device designing to smooth their production line. The head of the raw fabric rolls is usually attached with an adhesive tape to prevent the head from falling out in the transportation process. This project aims to design and build a prototype of an Automatic fabric roll edge extractor with the concept of engineering design thinking. The function of the device is to automate the removal process of adhesive tape without any manpower involved.

The app developed by our team is called Hearoad. This app is inspired by the Lennon Wall’s idea. We find out that Lennon Wall is popular among teenagers on expressing feelings and emotions, so we decided to develop an app using AR technique to simulate the Lennon Wall.
Our app having the functions to create memos written with your thoughts, opinions or feelings and we can stick these memos in the argument world using the AR technique. By applying the cloud technique, users can also read the memo written by other users and respond to the memo’s writer. The aims of our app are providing an innovative way for people to express their feelings, it has the features of location based and without filter bubble or echo chamber.

Hacking Wong follows the story of an outlandish twist to a mundane part of student life – submitting assignments. The character is late to submit his assignment and must reach the CS lab before the deadline, however, that is easier said than done since the lab is locked and he now finds himself being attacked by exploding frogs, shock boars and fire breathing dragons. Roam around the HKU campus in search of the TA who holds the key and defeat all enemies in this action-packed adventure.

Automation is the technology about combination of hardware and software to complete designated tasks with minimal manual intervention. Automation was first applied to automobile industry in the 1970s and started to extend its use in daily life since then. Design, Build & Fly Team 3 @ 2nd Inno Show

With the ever-growing demand for air cargo capacity comes the pursuit for cargo aircraft that combine a large payload with optimum efficiency. The Design, Build and Fly team set out to meet this challenge by creating a radio-controlled model airplane, to compete in the Payload Challenge organized by the British Model Flying Association (BMFA). The process involved careful research into aeronautical engineering theories and creative solutions. The effectiveness of the design was proved in test flights by two fully functional prototypes. Various issues were identified during the trials, carefully examined, and subsequently addressed in an iterative manner. The team has continuously implemented modifications to the design, in an effort to produce the model plane that would carry the target payload with the highest efficiency attainable, and the results will hopefully provide useful insights for future model builders and aircraft engineers alike.

MECH4412 Automated storage and retrieval system design competition

Under the course MECH4412 (Design and manufacturing), the hands-on project is an important element which allows the students to develop hands-on skill and problem-solving technique. In the last academic year, the project title was “An automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS)”. ASRS consists of a variety of computer-controlled systems for automatically placing and retrieving loads from defined storage locations. The benefits of an AS/RS system include reduced labour for transporting items into and out of inventory, reduced inventory levels, more accurate tracking of inventory, and space savings. Items are often stored more densely than in systems where items are stored and retrieved manually.

MemoMe App

MemoMe is an Android Application aiming at improving teenager mental health. It integrates multiple functionalities, allowing users to express their emotions, give and get support from other people, make grounded to-do plans facing their problems.

It enables users to plan meaningful activities and get reward after completion. The reward can be used later in the online community. The community is where users can express themselves anonymously and give support or get support via virtual gifts. The gifts are bought by the coins received from to-do plan completion by the user.

This application targets at the prevalence of teenager anxiety these days. One the one hand, it offers a stress relieving platform for teenagers to express their feelings anonymously and help each other to face the common growing pains. On the other hand, making to-do plans are strongly encouraged as this will help them to ease the anxiety from the root.

WeMake

WeMake provides four major services, which include customized dolls, pattern engraved phone glass film, customized accessories and print whatever you want. WeMake has implemented four advanced technologies to explore new business opportunities and attract customers. They are 3D scanning, 3D printing, augmented reality and cloud computing with the usage of mobile devices. First, customers would select the services and upload photo to the WeMake website. With the augmented reality technology, a preview of the product could be provided for customers. Once customers are satisfied with the preview, WeMake would print the product and deliver the finished product to customers. WeMake would always follow our mission: Whatever it takes, WeMake.

Featured Engineering Experiential Learning Projects

A number of Engineering experiential learning project teams are invited to showcase their innovative project works at the Engineering InnoShow.

COMP3330 Interactive Mobile Application Design and Programming

This course aims at introducing the design and development issues of mobile apps. Students will learn the basic principles, constraints and lifecycle of mobile apps. Then they will learn how to use modern object-oriented languages for the development and different design patterns. Next they will learn various development issues such as graphics, touch events, handling of concurrency, sensors, location services and server connection. Students will also participate in both individual assignments and group project to practice ideation, reading, writing, coding and presentation throughout this course.

ENGG1320 Engineers in the Modern World

This is an introductory course designed for first year Engineering students. The course aims to enable students to learn about engineering in the modern world, with an emphasis on engineering businesses, systems, and entrepreneurship, and how to bring new ideas to market in both engineering startups and corporate settings. The main objective is to provide students with a broad knowledge on how engineering entrepreneurship plays a key role in the global economy. Students will learn to explore and critique entrepreneurship as a systematic approach to designing, launching and running an engineering business that offers a product, process or service for sale.

HKU M2 Robotics team: 眀徳 格物

The HKU M2 Robotics is a multidisciplinary community for students who are passionate in advanced robotics. The team has achieved the 1st runner up in the Hong Kong Robocon robotic competition 2019. Members of the team will showcase their robots and explain their design and competition strategy during the workshop.

* The awarding teams will need to consult the Director of the Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing before joining the competitions or programmes and should seek reimbursement after successful completion of the competitions or programmes. The sponsorship will be reimbursed on an accountable basis on or before 30 June, 2019 (including but not limited to original invoices and receipts or other evidence of payment).

2. Microsoft innovation prize:  The most innovative project will receive a prize (Microsoft Surface pro 6) from Microsoft.

Awards & Prizes

Inno Show Award:  To encourage students to develop innovative mindset in tackling engineering and social problems, and to support outstanding ideas to join international design competitions, the Dean’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fund will appropriate an amount of HK$100K to support a maximum of five student teams participated in the Inno Show to take part in international design competitions.

A Panel to be chaired by the Associate Dean (Innovation) with the Dean of Engineering as one of the key members, will select the winning teams from the Inno Show event to be held at the end of semester 2, 2019-2020, based on the design put forward by the students, and their presentation during the Inno Show.

Skilled in Mobile Application Development, Multimedia Production, Game Development, and Web Development. I believe that other than technical skills, how we can influence, or even inspire others with the use of multimedia is equally important. Having been engaged in a number of video production projects, including commercial advertisement production, I hope that I will be able to create stunning and influential videos for the InnoWing, making it truly a platform to spark innovation.

I always feel like knowledge is just like pieces of a Go game, what you can do with it is endless. When you put the pieces together, each piece can have multiple functions and it all depends on how you put them together.  Simple ideas united into one can most definitely change the world.
