Automatic Chair Stacking System

Automation is becoming much popular nowadays, ranging from household appliances to large industrial machines. The project of Automatic Chair Stacking System is aimed to showcase the idea of automatic conference room by cooperating with the Automatic Chair Parking System. The systems will be able to set up the conference room and tidy up the chairs without any manpower. The system is built with different types of mechanical drives and Arduino programming.

Automatic Chair Parking System

The automatic chair parking system aims to provide a smart solution in
moving and arranging chairs in large venues such as classrooms while
reducing the risk of occupational and ergonomic injuries. This can also
reduce the reliance on labor force and ultimately improve efficiency. The
system therefore is designed to autonomously transport chairs to a
designated parking area with minimal human control.

Automatic cars

This project is participating the Robomaster ICRA AI challenge which aims to create an automatic small car which can conduct automatic navigation, decision making, auto-aiming (for shooting other robots). During the competition, robots will automatically navigate in an 8m * 4m competition region with barriers, localize itself, find the enemy robot, aim at its armor, and shoot it!

An Interactive AR Game

“With the increasing popularity and computation power of mobile devices, AR (Augmented reality) is more accessible. Video games, especially mobile games, can utilize AR technology to provide an immersive user experience. However, currently, most of the Mobile AR game usually lacks interactions between users and virtual objects due to the limited size and control interface of the device, nor can provide synchronized multiplayer expensive.

This project is to develop an AR interactive mobile game prototype that includes hand gesture control and world map sharing. We expect this technology can be applied in the education realm in the future.”

Smart Patrol Robot

With Covid-19 raging around the world in 2020, it not only sheds light on the critical role of airports to curb the spread of commutable diseases but also reveals the importance of fever checking measures at airports. Therefore, the project explores the possibility of utilising the smart patrol robot for fever checking at the gate area. The project incorporated a thermographic camera on the robot and proceeded with different stages of data collection, data processing, and face recognition. A web portal has also been developed for fever case management.

Smart Sterilizing and Cleaning Robot

Targeting on the elderly home, SORbot is customized for providing the sterilisation with ozone. With the existing products in the market, most of them were created to be used in a large public area, including shopping mall, airport, lobby of a building, etc. SORbot is a unique product in the market and applies the combination of AGV and ozone generator so that it can undergo sterilization by itself and kill the virus even in the corner.

Design and Modification of a Rototiller for the Grass/Sedge Control

WWF-HK, the management organization of the Mai Po Nature Reserve, has to offer waterbirds a mudflat without vegetation. Currently, workers are deployed into the mudflat to remove the vegetation. However this method is inefficient and dangerous. WWF-HK wishes to develop a product to reduce the necessity of sending out workers to the intertidal mudflat. Field visits were conducted to understand the design constraints. Removal methods adopted by other wetland management in the world were studied. As a result, radio-controlled hovercraft mounted with a grass cutter was chosen as the solution to the problem. The product was tested in different settings, including lawn, water and Mai Po. Results proved the product met the target specification. The product would serve as a reference for WWF-HK in future projects in vegetation removal.

HKU Racing @ 4th Inno Show

HKU Racing, the first motor racing team in HKU and the first team based in Hong Kong to compete in Formula Student (European series), was established by a group of engineering students in 2018. Electrification of the transportation system is a leading trend in the modern world, where building up a race car with the combination of the electric powertrain and the traditional mechanical system is an innovative activity. With the university’s support and the team’s effort, the team has achieved 3rd place overall in class 2 and 2nd place in design at the Formula Student 2019.

A cloud enabled smart mask for better living

The project includes designing a smart mask with the use of SolidWorks software and 3D printing technology. A mobile application that can receive data from the mask and communicate with the cloud server was developed. This is a relatively new and innovative idea. Smart mask is still a newly-coined concept as there are few similar projects published. As far as this moment, this is the world’s first cloud based smart mask project with a completed prototype.
