Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering

HKU Robocon 2022 @ 7th Inno Show

The annual Robocon competition project allows HKU engineering students from different disciplines to design and fabricate innovative robots with an integration of various advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, computer vision, and real-time embedded control. Besides, it provides hands-on experiences on product design, prototyping, CNC machining, design and fabrication of electric circuit and PCB, control program development, etc.

Furthermore, senior members mentor junior members in each year and hence valuable experiences, knowledge, and skills for design and fabrication of robots can be sustained for next year’s competition. In addition, it enables the HKU students to exchange their knowledge and skills with students from local and other countries’ universities. Therefore, it motivates the students to engage in experiential learning via exploring and integrating various advanced technologies. As a result, students’ innovation and teamwork abilities would be enhanced.

InnoDragon

Innodragon is a high-quality soccer robots for teenagers, and adults who wish to enjoy the fun of robotics with their kids. Our robot utilizes high quality, long-lasting materials, including CNC aluminum, rubber and solid wood to ensure ease of control and robustness. It also unleashes creativity by allowing flexibility in programming and assembly of components.

IMSE 2121 Engineering Training

The main aim of this training course is to equip students with practical experience and
a general exposure to (i) manufacturing processes, (ii) product design, and (iii) system
development.
The training course includes a number of modules, covering areas such as design
practice, manufacturing technology, measurement, quality control, assembly
technology, inspection, troubleshooting, testing, and modification, health and safety,
and environmental issues.
These modules are designed to motivate students to use creative thinking in the
projects, which help them become innovative and open-minded in solving
engineering problems.

Smart Soccer Robot @ 6th Inno Show

This project aims to build a soccer robot including a design, a final product and a business plan for our product. The design of our group’s soccer robot is based on a real spider. It includes the spider legs and webs. The spider front legs design helps trap the ball and not to get out again. Our soccer robot is user friendly. It contains two modes of control. With the attractive outfit of our robot at the same time, our robot aims to attract more teenagers in Hong Kong to know more and get interested in STEM.

mBot/Arduino @ 5th Inno Show

The smart soccer robot will be the key to your victory in the soccer matches. The product is aimed at teenagers learning STEM education while winning everyone’s favor in its looking. Our no-symmetric design is inspired by Dynastes Hercules, a beetle that can grab the target and secure it. We have made efforts to let everyone can quickly get started with our product. These parts are designed for assembly as people only need to insert the wooden plate together and use a few screws to make the car firmer. At the same time, we have optimized the control of the car so that both novices and professionals can drive them by the style they like.

ENGG1320-IMSE-Modo_Robo @ 5th Inno Show

Ours project is a soccer robot that is designed to look like an actual soccer ball. It has a ball-like shell, thus having an attractive look, while also being sturdy. It also has a pair of arms which is ide and slightly curved. This way the robot can maintain control of the ball effectively, while also allowing shooting (which requires certain control techniques). Its main control mechanism is designed to consist of only 2 joysticks, thus allowing easy control. Its movement speed is also determined by the magnitude of the joysticks. This ensures the robot can be moved flexibly.

Smart Sterilizing and Cleaning Robot

Targeting on the elderly home, SORbot is customized for providing the sterilisation with ozone. With the existing products in the market, most of them were created to be used in a large public area, including shopping mall, airport, lobby of a building, etc. SORbot is a unique product in the market and applies the combination of AGV and ozone generator so that it can undergo sterilization by itself and kill the virus even in the corner.

A cloud enabled smart mask for better living

The project includes designing a smart mask with the use of SolidWorks software and 3D printing technology. A mobile application that can receive data from the mask and communicate with the cloud server was developed. This is a relatively new and innovative idea. Smart mask is still a newly-coined concept as there are few similar projects published. As far as this moment, this is the world’s first cloud based smart mask project with a completed prototype.

Logistics delivery trajectories analysis by machine learning

“In traditional logistics operations, activities and their durations were not properly recorded. Thus, it is difficult to understand and model the daily operations.

In this project, with given trajectories, a methodology is proposed to infer the types of activities of the delivery workers in a journey.

The method is to analyze the trajectories which can be identified from the collections of GPS data collected by the devices the deliver worker carried when they are on duty.

We would want to know whether the delivery worker is traveling or delivering the goods given a trajectory segment.”
